Britain braced for heavy rain and 60mph gales – but 18C sunshine to return for bank holiday

The Met Office has warned of floods and power cuts tomorrow as a MONTH'S worth of rain is expected to fall

BRITS are set to be hit with a week of heavy rain and 60mph winds but 18C sunshine is set to return for bank holiday.

The Met Office has launched a weather warning of rain and wind as torrential downpours will blast the South tonight, leaving some at risk of flooding tomorrow morning.

As rain stretches to the rest of the UK by Monday morning, gale force winds and potential flooding could make for nightmarish driving conditions and road closures across the country.

Downpours are due to last throughout Monday, with plunging temperatures cold enough to bring SNOW on high ground.

Met Office forecaster Greg Dewhurst said: "We could see 60 to 70mm in some places which will lead to some localised flooding. It’s a pretty miserable 12 to 24 hours to come."

But from Tuesday, temperatures are expected to slowly soar to 13C, the average for this time of year.

Yellow weather warnings for rain are in place from tonight through Monday for the East Midlands, East of England, London & South East England, Yorkshire & Humber.

The Met Office has warned that homes and businesses could also be flooded in areas hit by the worst rainfall, as travel chaos looks increasingly likely.

Flood alerts are also in place for the South of England and the Midlands.

Greg Dewhurst from the Met Office told Sun Online: "It's going to be a wet start to the week, especially in the South East.

"In these areas we'll see winds of around 40 to 50mph, up to 60mph in some places.

"The rain is going to stay all day, with up to 70mm falling - more than a month's rainfall in one day."

Mr Dewhurst said temperatures would remain cool, around 7 to 8C - but the weather will improve towards the end of the week.

Tuesday will see dry, bright weather punctuated by outbreaks of brain, with a far warmer 13 to 14C temperatures.

By Wednesday, the low pressure system will have disappeared but a new weather system from the Atlantic will bring more rain to the UK.

By the end of the week, the weather will be looking far more promising - with a BBQ scorcher of a Bank Holiday still on the cards.

"We'll have temperatures of around 18C around the Bank holiday weekend, with fairly settled weather across the UK."
